The main motifs visible in Alicja Bielawska’s Jacquard textile – spiral staircases, spherical trees, cuboid rubble-concrete prefabricated elements, and branching street networks, all drawn from the work of Barbara Brukalska and Helena Syrkus – lose their literal character and take on metaphorical meaning. The artist weaves a story about the two protagonists, moving between different scales: practical details acquire a cosmic dimension, linking architecture with the order of the world, while organic forms intertwine with the geometry of systems. The Jacquard technique, an industrial weaving method in which the reverse side of the fabric forms a color negative of the front, further captures the multidimensionality and ambiguity of intertwined narratives, as well as the individual’s entanglement in the uncertain and unpredictable course of history.
